    The assessment of trait emotional intelligence: psychometric characteristics of the TEIQue-full form in a large Italian adult sample

    Trait Emotional Intelligence (or trait emotional self-efficacy) is a constellation of emotional perceptions assessed through questionnaires and rating scales (Petrides et al., 2007b). This paper examined the psychometric features of the Trait Emotional Questionnaire Full Form (TEIQue-FF; Petrides, 2009b) in the Italian context. Incremental validity in the prediction of depression and anxiety was also tested with respect to the Big Five. Participants were 1343 individuals balanced for gender (690 females and 653 males) whose mean age was 29.65 years (SD = 13.64, range 17-74 years). They completed a questionnaire battery containing the TEIQue and measures of the Big Five, depression, and anxiety (both trait and state). Results indicated that the performance of the TEIQue-FF in the Italian context was comparable to the original United Kingdom version as regards its reliability and factor structure. Moreover, the instrument showed incremental validity in the prediction of depression and state-trait anxiety after controlling for the Big Five

    How HEXACO personality traits predict different selfie-posting behaviors among adolescents and young adults

    Selfies are usually defined as self-portrait photos shared on social networks. Recent studies investigated how personality traits, and specifically narcissism, can be associated to different kinds of selfies. The HEXACO model, a new theory on personality structure, investigates personality on six dimensions, among which there is the Honesty/Humility trait, found strongly and negatively associated to narcissism. Thus, this study aims to investigate how different kinds of selfies could be predicted by HEXACO personality traits, controlling for age, gender and sexual orientation. Participants were 750 adolescents and young adults (59.1% girls, N = 443) from 13 to 30 years (Mage = 20.96; SDage = 4.23) who completed an online survey composed by the Kinsey scale, three questions about the frequency of different kinds of selfies (i.e. own selfies, group selfies and selfies with partner) and 60-item Hexaco Personality Inventory-Revised. Results showed that females, adolescents and not- exclusively heterosexuals posted more own selfies, and that adolescents posted also more group selfies and selfies with partner. Moreover lower Honesty/Humility, lower Conscientiousness, higher Emotionality and higher Extraversion significantly predict both own selfies and group selfies. Finally, only lower Honesty/Humility and higher Emotionality predict selfies with partner. Results suggested a common pattern of personality traits that can explain selfies behaviors according to literature on HEXACO model. Specifically, these findings enlightened that Honesty/Humility and Emotionality traits seem to be relevant in understanding selfies. People who post more selfies are lower in Honesty/Humility, showing a strong sense of self-importance and feeling superior. Moreover, they show higher Emotionality that is related to looking for social reinforcement on social networks. Only for own and group selfies, people high in Extraversion probably feel self-confident in groups, also in the online dimension, and low extraverted people probably posted less frequently because they feel uncomfortable being at the center of attention. Finally, people with high Conscientiousness spend less time online because they consider social networks as a distraction from their tasks. Thus, HEXACO model allows to better understand which personality traits can predict different kinds of selfies. Limitations and implications for future research are discussed

      Physicians in the field of respiratory medicine are particularly concerned about the availability of a reliable diagnostic tool to investigate respiratory allergy. Usually, basophils are easy to obtain from peripheral blood and therefore they represent a reproducible model to assess allergy in individuals. Cell assays called basophil activation tests (BATs) are widespread tools for allergy diagnosis and are easily available in most of the medical labs. The strategy by which basophils are captured in a flow cytometry protocol has met many suggestions, recommendations and experimental novelties in recent years, yet the debate needs to be further expanded. Concerns still remain about the suitability of the many approaches to make the basophil activation test (BAT) an excellent and practical tool to diagnose allergy, while improving its analytical performance. This technical report describes the methodological aspects of the use of the protocol adopting the panel CD45dim/CD123bright/HLA-DRneg to gate basophils in flow cytometry, trying to highlight the main biases related to an incorrect use of this protocol.

    Job crafting and job satisfaction in a sample of Italian teachers: the mediating role of Perceived Organizational Support

    We aimed to explore the mediating role of perceived organizational support (POS) on the relationship between job crafting and job satisfaction, which is considered as an important outcome for the development of well being at work. Participants were 263 teachers from public schools in the South of Italy. Results indicated that POS fully mediated the relationship between job crafting and job satisfaction. Implications for management educational practice and limitations of the study are discussed

    Academic failure: individual, organizational, and social factors

    The high percentage of university dropouts in Europe underlines the relevance of understanding which factors lead students to leave university and to be dissatisfied with this experience. Previous studies have focused on only some predictors of academic failure. The present study tested a structural equation model with latent variables to determine the impact of psychological, organizational, and relational variables on the intention to drop out of university and dissatisfaction with the university experience. An online survey was completed by 431 university students (M = 23.06, SD = 5.5, 362 females) recruited from different courses at several Italian universities. Results showed that the intention to drop out of university was negatively related to self-efficacy, institutional commitment, and academic integration, and positively related to an external locus of control. Dissatisfaction with the university experience was negatively associated with self-efficacy, institutional commitment, and academic integration. Implications for preventive programs and interventions are presented

    Surgical and histological evidence of case reports showing Schwannomas in the nasal area

    Introduction and importance: Schwannomas are benign neurogenic neoplasms with an uncommon involvement of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, which usually appear as a painless formation. We report two cases of nasal schwannoma that was successfully treated by surgical excision with satisfactory functional outcomes. The aim of this study is to discuss the clinical assessment and imaging, (CT, MRI) differential diagnosis, histological examination, surgical approaches of this rarely encountered neoplasm in the sinus-nasal area. Case presentation: Case 1: a 53 years-old Caucasian male, hospitalized in the ENT Department with a 5-month progressive history of right nasal obstruction without epistaxis was diagnosed as a Schwannoma following clinical, histology and ENT endoscopy examination. Case 2: a 45 years-old Caucasian male with asymptomatic swelling arising 4 months before in the nasal tip area with progressive nasal deformity, diagnosed as a schwannoma and analyzed with MRI. Clinical discussion: Case 1: The patient had an uneventful post-operative course and a follow-up examination at 36 months showed no recurrence of the neoplasm with satisfactory functional result. Case 2: The patient had an uneventful post-operative course and a follow-up examination at 5 years showed no recurrence of the neoplasm and satisfactory aesthetic result. Conclusions: Schwannomas arising from sinonasal area are extremely rare, painless and with slow-growing evolution. The surgical option and histologic analysis are mandatory for a correct diagnosis

    The Role of Union Support in Coping With Job Insecurity: A Study Among Union Members from Three European Countries

    The present study examines the potential moderating role of union support in the relationship between job insecurity and work-related attitudes and well-being of unionised employees. Survey data collected among union members from three European countries (The Netherlands, Italy and Sweden) indicate that job insecurity is associated with reduced levels of job satisfaction, well-being and organisational commitment. Contrary to expectations, union support moderated neither the effect of job insecurity on job satisfaction nor its effect on wellbeing. However, in two countries a moderating effect of union support on relation between the job insecurity and organisational commitment was found.     In vitro Biphasic Effect of Honey Bee Venom on Basophils from Screened Healthy Blood Donors

    Apis mellifera L. bee venom is the most studied hymenoptera allergen, but many aspects of its action on human basophils remain unclear. Allergologists seek evidence of the effectiveness of bee venom immunotherapy as this approach is the chosen treatment for systemic allergic reactions. The effect of bee venom on human basophils in vitro has not been studied in detail for many reasons, including the paucity of basophils in peripheral blood, inter-individual basophil response variability, and the reliability and predictability of basophil activation tests. We conducted a brief preliminary survey of the effect of Apis bee venom on healthy asymptomatic (non-allergic) subjects. A dose of an aqueous commercial extract of Apis bee venom as high as 10 µg/mL activated resting basophils (CD63=+80-90%, CD203c=+30%), while it inhibited the expression of CD63 (-50%) following basophil stimulation by the soluble agonists formyl-Met-Leu-Phe or anti-IgE. The activation of resting basophils appeared to be dose-related. Only when basophils were activated with an IgE-mediated agonist, did bee venom extract exhibit a possible priming mechanism at the lowest doses used only via CD63, while it was ineffective via CD203c. Autocrine interleukin-3 may play a role in the observed biphasic behavior

    Job Insecurity, Union Support and Intentions to Resign Membership: A Psychological Contract Perspective

    This article uses psychological contract theory to explore the consequences of job insecurity among union members. We hypothesize that the perception of job insecurity will correlate with a lower level of perceived union support and a higher intention to resign union membership. We also test whether the relationship between job insecurity and membership turnover is mediated by (a lack of) perceived union support. In Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands, an association is found between job insecurity and a reduction in perceived union support, and between job insecurity and the intention to resign membership; this association is also fully mediated by (a lack of) perceived union support. None of these hypotheses are corroborated in Sweden. We discuss implications of these findings for future research and for unions in Europe
